Bifeo 3 bismuth ferrite having multiferroic properties at room temperature is the most well known single phase multiferroic material which has been under extensive studies. The bismuth ferrite thin films need to shrink to the nanscale for use in various nanodevices in the future. Considerable efforts have been stressed on the successful deposition of bismuth ferrite thin films with the desirable film structure and electrical properties for technological demands 1 5. We report a detailed characterization of the electrical properties of two bismuth ferrites bi 2 fe 4 o 9 and bi 25 feo 39 and conclude that under normal conditions of synthesis of bifeo 3 at high temperatures in atmospheres of either air or oxygen these other bismuth ferrite phases are unlikely to be the reason for any leakage conductivity.

Bi 2 fe 4 o 9 is another type of the bismuth ferrite family that is usually produced as a side product when producing bifeo 3 13. It is synthesized in bulk and thin film form and both its antiferromagnetic g type ordering néel. It is one of the most promising lead free piezoelectric materials which exhibits multiferroic properties at room temperature. Bifeo 3 is a lead free material with a high curie temperature t c 850 c and a giant remanent polarization p r 146 μc cm 2 and it is a promising material for high density ferroelectric random access memory the lattice structure of bifeo 3 crystal is rhombohedral perovskite which belongs to the r3c space group with unit cell parameters a r 5 364 å and α γ 0 6.

The room temperature phase of bifeo3 is classed as rhombohedral belonging to the space group r3c.
