It will eventually climg with only 1 panel if you dont use any energy but it would take a long time p so yea the more the merrier when it comes to panels i have run my bases on full solar since i started not that long ago they work great but you have to be energy efficiant and patient to start with untill they build up some.

Yes they do as long as they produce more power than your base needs the generator runs but doesnt use fuel and the battery charges when the battery runs out it starts using fuel.
Batteries are not charging.
Next add a switch to power on off the items which you want to use generator power for.
All the damage is on the turrets though not the panels.
If you look at the total power the panels was producing you will see that the solar energy was less than that of the consumption rate.
Maybe that s your problem.

I tested with a base build core 10 large solar panels on concrete blocks and a capacitor.
Solar panel blocks are blocks used as an alternate source of power.
If there are generators present the base will draw power from the capacitor s before using the generator s.
It must be paired with the capacitor solar to store the energy absorbed by the blocks.
The best way to make use of solar energy is to set up device grouping in the control panel.
Solar capacitors will always prioritize using solar energy before burning fuel.
If placing a capacitor down and it lights up but then the light quickly goes out they are not charging.
Also solar panels won t work if you have a generator in your base.
Solar panels have both sloped and horizontal varieties to enable more efficient.
But even still i don t think you re ever going to pull more than a few kpu from a full array of 15 panels even in space.
The capacitor for the station is turned on but the station is not getting any power from the panels.
Then reversed the process.
In addition any generators present in the base will not consume fuel as long as there is ample solar energy stored in capacitors to meet the base s power needs.
Second i noticed is that your building is drawing power from the solar panels and battery first before pulling from the generators.

Solar panels don t seem to work very well in creative mode from what i ve experienced.

I have a space station with 15 solar panels facing the sun.
Tried placing capacitor first and then solar panels.
Having a backup generator is probably a good idea.
Add non essential devices or those which use large amounts of power to a generator power group.
